Fat Reduction Surgery – Liposuction
Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty and suction lipectomy, is a surgical procedure designed to improve the body shape by removing unwanted fat deposits from specific areas of the body. Liposuction can be used on the neck, face, chin, chest, abdomen, back, buttocks, hips, knees, thighs, and upper arms. The procedure can be combined with other cosmetic procedures, such as abdominoplasty, breast augmentation, or facelift surgery. Technique for liposuction has improved over the years, allowing for better fat removal with the least complication. Power-assisted liposuction and tumescent liposuction are two improvements that Dr. Bui utilizes to create a nicer body contour for you.

The best candidate for liposuction is a person who is physically healthy and near normal weight but has areas of excess fat that are resistant to regular diet and exercise. Patients should also be psychologically stable and have realistic expectations of what the procedure can offer. Patients with firm, elastic skin tend to achieve the best results, although good result can still be obtained in patients with less than excellent skin elasticity.
The Surgery
The amount of time needed for liposuction will vary due to several factors, including the amount of fat being removed, the technique used, and the size of the area being treated. The procedure is commonly performed on an outpatient basis and typically involves either local or general anesthesia.
The procedure begins with small incisions made on the areas of the body to be treated. Solution containing anesthetic medication is infused into these areas. Small blunt-tip tube or cannula is used to remove the fat. The incisions are then closed with sutures. A compression garment is applied over the areas treated.
Because the procedure is performed in an accredited outpatient surgery center, large volume liposuction can be performed safely with patients still able to go home on the same day.
The Recovery
After surgery, you may experience some discomfort, pain, stiffness, burning sensation or temporary numbness. Some drainage may be noted at the incision site for the first 24 hours. Swelling and mild bruising is common.
Patients should start walking around as soon as possible, or as recommended, to help prevent blood clots in the legs. A compression garment similar to a girdle is typically worn for several weeks to support the skin and control swelling. Stitches are typically removed within seven to ten days. Most of the swelling and bruising subsides within three weeks, though slight swelling can persist for more than three months. You may not notice an immediate change in the shape of your body after surgery due to swelling but the result will be apparent when all of the swelling has completely resolved.
The length of time it takes to recover after liposuction will vary for each patient. Generally, most patients are able to return to work within a few days to one week after surgery, though more strenuous activity will need to be postponed for two to four weeks.
Liposuction is a very popular and effective procedure for reducing excess fat and for improving contour of your body with little risk.
